PREVENTION PROGRAMMES

Our prevention programmes focus on creating awareness on the harmful consequences of substance abuse. Furthermore, the goal of all the above-mentioned programmes is to enhance behaviour change thereby promoting healthy and responsible living.  The link between substance abuse and HIV/AIDS is also discussed.  Through education the children/youth/women & community members are equipped with information and life skills to make informed decisions about substances, to effectively cope with stressful situations, where alcohol and drugs are used inappropriately, and to make healthier and productive lifestyle choices.

The Information talks promote internalisation of values, beliefs, rights and responsibilities on substance abuse. Furthermore, it aims to address the prevention of other drug related problems such as crime, violence and risky sexual behaviour.

By taking our projects to the marginalized communities, we will be more accessible to the poor and vulnerable. Treatment targets all those who need it. Chemical dependency is often referred to as a democratic illness and all that use mood changing chemicals are at risk.

Our treatment programme assists the service user to remain sober, the outcome of which is often taking control of his life, living a healthier lifestyle, maintaining his place of work and thus providing for his family – Poverty eradication.

TREATMENT PROGRAMME (GAMBLING)

A specialized programme aimed at treating compulsive gambling is also offered at the centre in collaboration with the Gambling Board.

The office has a trained Treatment Professional that forms part of the National Responsible Gambling Programme.

Programme gamblers are referred by the Helpline for Counselling Services. Some problem gamblers implement voluntary self-exclusions at the gambling facilities.

They are required to attend the therapeutic programme with the treatment professional before the Self Exclusion Upliftment can be done, which SANCA has been collaborating on for many years with the Gambling Board.
